New high speed train route between Madrid and Barcelona

9 November, 2022

The first private high speed operator in Spain, Iryo, will launch its services on 25 November with a route between Madrid, Zaragoza and Barcelona, thus completing the de-regularisation of rail transport in Spain. It is launched on the market with a proposal for flexible fares to enjoy the four classes which its trains incorporate.

After its launch late November, the rail company owned by Nostrum and Trenitalia - which integrate the ILSA consortium -, will open a route between Madrid, Cuenca and Valencia on 16 December. The network will grow progressively in 2023 with the opening of routes to Córdoba, Seville and Málaga from March and to Alicante from June.

As explained by the CEO of Iryo, Simone Gorini, and the general manager, Víctor Bañares, the objective is to establish a new high-speed standard in Spain, a market in which they will compete with Renfe (and its AVE and Avlo brands) and the French SNCF (with the brand Ouigo).
