PortAventura to power its roller coasters with solar energy
26 July, 2023The PortAventura World holiday resort and amusement park has unveiled its new photovoltaic power plant, with which it will be self-sufficient from now on, covering a third of the needs of its roller coasters and other facilities with this plant made up of 11,102 solar panels, with an output of 6.05 megawatts peak (MWp), which will generate 10GWh/year.
As reported by the Tarragona resort, 'PortAventura Solar' is one of the largest solar panel installations for self-consumption in Europe, occupying 6.4 hectares - an area equivalent to nine football pitches - and the project has involved an investment of 6 million euros until it is commissioned.
In addition, the decarbonisation strategy deployed by PortAventura World is complemented by a 100% renewable energy contract and one of the largest electric car charging hubs in a European resort, all with Endesa as an energy partner. The installation will prevent the emission of 4,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere per year, according to the company.
