The Cathedral of Mallorca is an architectural icon not only of Palma but of all the Balearic Islands. It totally defines the city’s skyline and dazzles anyone who visits it. Every corner tells a unique story that contributes to its legacy. Here are five facts that make it even more attractive to any traveller.

  1. It has the largest rose window in the Gothic world. With a diameter of 13.8 metres and more than 1,100 pieces of glass, it is unparalleled in colour.

  2. Antoni Gaudí and Miquel Barceló worked on it. Gaudí opened windows and moved choirs and altarpieces to turn the cathedral into an elegant, luminous and diaphanous space. Barceló created the ceramic mural in the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament.

  3. It contains one of the largest organs in Spain. It is one of the most valuable works in Mallorca Cathedral and its construction in 1484 marked the beginning of the Mallorcan school of organ builders.

  4. From May to October, its terraces are open to the public. Anyone visiting the cathedral can climb the more than 200 steps up to its terraces to enjoy spectacular views.

  5. It has a royal mausoleum. The Trinity Chapel is the final resting place of Kings James II and James III of Mallorca.
