Gran Canaria becomes a certified sustainable destination

31 January, 2024

Gran Canaria is committed to positioning itself in the European market as a more sustainable tourist destination. So the Cabildo’s Department of Tourism began, in late 2021, its commitment to sustainability within the Biosphere system, an international methodology for the management, recognition and certification of sustainability created by the Responsible Tourism Institute (RTI).

In recognition of its efforts in this area, the island has been awarded the ‘Biosphere Certified’ distinction as a destination after passing an audit process, in which its commitment to sustainability, and part of its business network, has been recognised, based on its contribution to the 17 SDGs and 169 goals of the UN 2030 Agenda.

So Gran Canaria has become one of the 15 European destinations with the highest number of accommodation with sustainability certification. On 25 January, during the Fitur tourism fair in Madrid, the Secretary General of the Responsible Tourism Institute, Patricio Azcárate Díaz de Losada, will present this distinction to the President of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, Antonio Morales.
