7 February, 2024Gran Canaria was recognised during the first day of Fitur 2024 as one of the destinations that best looks after LGBTQ+ tourists. The Spanish Network of Destinations for Diversity presented the island’s Councillor for Tourism, Carlos Álamo, with the Fitur LGBT+ award at the opening ceremony of the Fitur LGBT+ section of Spain’s major tourism fair.
The councillor received the distinction for the destination’s commitment to this group and the continuity of a commitment that goes back several decades. The event was attended by the Spanish Minister of Tourism, Jordi Hereu Boher, as well as Miguel Sanz, Director General of Turespaña, among other authorities.
The councillor was grateful for the recognition and said the link between Gran Canaria and the LGBTQ+ community already has four decades of common history and “we feel very close” because “it has represented a unique opportunity for tourism on the island, which has always responded”, highlighting the moments of greatest need.
