4 September, 2024Train stations are more than just a starting point or end destination of your train journey, they often form your first impression of a country or city. Some of the most beautiful stations in the world retain an almost cinematic aura that makes them memorable.
Design and functionality go hand in hand to create unique spaces, whose main objective is to be a point of arrival and departure for travellers. Some of the most beautiful train stations in the world have been selected by National Geographic; there are stations for all tastes and from almost every era, and one of them is in Madrid.
We’re talking about Puerta de Atocha station. The remodelling of the old Mediodía station has given rise over time to a unique space, with a vestibule in which more than 500 plant species coexist in a tropical garden witnessing the comings and goings of travellers. It forms part of the refurbishment that was carried out for the inauguration of the AVE high-speed train between Madrid and Seville in 1992, under the supervision of architect Rafael Moneo.
