Spain to boost international traffic to smaller airports
25 September, 2024Spain’s Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, has expressed his openness to promoting a plan to encourage international flights at medium or small airports through formulas that could involve the loss of revenue from airport taxes, but improve the local economy.
Puente has met with Ryanair to discuss a possible incentive scheme to improve passenger traffic at these categories of airports. He gave as an example the Airport of Valladolid, a city of which he was mayor and which has lost the six international connections it once had.
In cases such as Valladolid, the minister has opted to study an incentive plan with airlines to improve the number of passengers at this facility. He also pointed out that cities such as Granada, with attractions such as the Alhambra and Sierra Nevada, should aspire to more international flights, and said that the government will seek formulas for such traffic.
