International arrivals in Spain soared 10% in August
2 October, 2024In August, Spanish airports received 11.1 million international arrivals (corresponding to the number of foreign or domestic passengers travelling on international flights) registering an increase of +9.6% compared to the same month in 2023, according to Turespaña’s monthly report.
By flows, the predominant flow was from the European Union, with 56.6% of total passengers, registering an increase of +9.3%, while travellers arriving from the rest of the world accounted for 43.4%, +9.9% more than in the same month of 2023. The UK with 2.6 million international passengers generated 23.6% of the total flow of arrivals to Spain in August, registering a year-on-year increase of +8.1%. The Balearic and Canary Islands were the main destinations, attracting 49% of the total number of British passengers.
Between January and October, Spain received 71.2 million international passengers, an increase of +11.9% compared to the same period in 2023. Compared to the similar pre-pandemic period in 2019, this represents an additional 6.5 million international arrivals, which are entirely accounted for by low-cost carriers, as traditional airlines are more than 3 million below their pre-pandemic traffic.
