The new Barcelona-Mallorca fast ferry reduces emissions by 22%.

8 January, 2025

The new fast ferry with dual LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) engines of Baleària that operates between Barcelona - Alcúdia (Mallorca) - Ciutadella (Menorca) reduces CO₂ emissions by 22% compared to the high-speed boat that previously operated on this route. The data was released in a presentation in the port of Barcelona in which the president of the shipping company, Adolfo Utor, was very satisfied with the results.

Baleària is the only ferry company that uses natural gas as fuel, a commitment that began in 2017 in the port of Barcelona. Between 2019 and 2024, it has progressively incorporated 11 newly built and re-engined ships that run on LNG into its fleet. This year, Baleària has carried out 80% of LNG supply operations in the port of Barcelona. This is equivalent to 325,000 MWh, a record figure for the shipping company, which is three times the volume of last year.

The company has transported over half of the cargo and passengers from the port of Barcelona to the Balearic Islands, in its four daily departures connecting with Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera. ‘This year we have transported over 500,000 passengers on the routes from Barcelona, which represents a growth of 12%,’ said Utor.
