The most modern and sustainable cruise terminal opens in Barcelona

11 April, 2025

The Port of Barcelona has launched the new MSC Cruises terminal, designed by the Ricardo Bofill Taller de Arquitectura studio. The three-storey infrastructure incorporates energy-efficient technologies, sustainable materials, solar panels, use of natural light and a rainwater collection system for reuse.

The facility, which has received LEED Gold certification for its sustainability, is ready to operate an average of one ship per day and expects some 190 stopovers by 2025. It will be used by the ships of MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys, the luxury division of the MSC Group.

On its first day of operation, the terminal welcomed Explora II, the second ship of the Explora Journeys brand. The shore-to-ship electrical connection is expected to be operational by the end of 2026 or early 2027, which will allow ships to switch off engines while in port, eliminating local emissions.

This new development consolidates the MSC Group’s commitment to Barcelona and represents a step forward in sustainable infrastructures within the cruise sector.
