New electrical connection for ferries in Port of Barcelona with Grimaldi
11 April, 2025The Port of Barcelona has launched its first electrical connection system for ferries (OPS) in collaboration with Grimaldi Logística España. The new installation, located on the Sant Bertran quay, allows ferries operating between Barcelona and the Balearic Islands - such as the Ciudad de Palma and the Ciudad de Sóller, belonging to the Trasmed shipping company - to connect to the electricity grid and switch off their engines while they are docked.
This development, which is part of the Nexigen plan, aims to reduce emissions from port activity by 47%, improving air quality and reducing noise in areas close to the port. This connection alone will avoid 2,090 tonnes of CO₂ per year, which directly benefits nearby neighbourhoods such as Poble-sec.

The system combines a fixed and a mobile installation and is already operating in a pilot phase. It has involved an investment of 3.5 million euros and has been designed to allow simultaneous connections in the future.
With this step, the Port of Barcelona is moving towards its objective of being a carbon neutral port by 2050, integrating sustainability, innovation and direct improvement in the citizens’ quality of life.
