Spain seeks new air routes to lesser-known destinations

23 April, 2025

Turespaña and Aena have set out to redefine Spain’s air map at the Routes Europe 2025 fair, held in Seville, with the aim of attracting new routes from Europe to lesser-known destinations and improving off-season connectivity. Over 50 meetings with international operators make a move to strengthen the air link with Europe, focusing on territorial diversification, sustainability and deseasonalisation.

The plan is to define a new air connectivity strategy to replace the one that has been developed in recent years, in order to recover connectivity in those destinations and airports that have not reached pre-pandemic figures. According to the general director of Turespaña, Miguel Sanz, the new approach prioritises routes to the interior and north of the peninsula and seeks to extend the season in coastal areas and archipelagos. This orientation responds to a more responsible, slower and more profitable tourism, in line with the 2021-2025 Strategic Marketing Plan.

With a forecast of 11.1 million international seats in April and over 30 new connections planned for this year, the drive to strengthen the airline network is complemented by the recovery of long-haul routes, such as Tokyo, the new connection with Chengdu and the forthcoming opening of the Bilbao-New York route.
