Meliá and Riu: progress in reducing carbon footprint at events
18 June, 2025Meliá Hotels International and Riu Hotels & Resorts advance in their strategies to reduce the carbon footprint in the MICE segment.
Meliá has achieved carbon neutrality in over 4,000 events held in 2024 in 40 of its hotels thanks to the Road to Net Zero Events programme, which includes the measurement of emissions and offsetting through carbon credits purchased through Climatetrade. This effort has avoided over 1,300 tonnes of CO₂ and financed clean energy projects in the Dominican Republic. The footprint of the Palacio de Congresos de Palma and Meliá Palma Bay has also been offset, converting them into carbon neutral spaces.

Riu has launched a service at the Riu Plaza España that calculates and predicts the carbon footprint of events before and after they are held. It uses historical data and artificial intelligence tools and provides the client with a detailed report of the footprint generated. This initiative, developed together with Creast, is part of the Proudly Committed strategy, which has managed to reduce the chain's carbon footprint by 50% in two years. Both groups thus seek to lead a more sustainable and responsible events model.
