Spain recovers 85% of passenger numbers received in April 2019

Spain welcomed almost 7 million passengers (6,963,964) arriving from international airports in April, representing an 85.6% recovery in numbers compared with the same month in the year 2019, the last year considered as “normal” conditions before the global pandemic. This figure represents eight times more traffic than in the Previous year, according to information provided to the Spanish Tourism Institute Turespaña by Aena.

On looking at the breakdown by country, the leading market was the UK with 1,601,009 travellers, representing 23% of the total; followed by Germany with 1,121,843 passengers and a share of 16.1%, France with 16,1% (597,070 travellers and 8.6% of the total) and Italy (596,349 passengers and 8.6% of the total).

International air passengers arriving at airports in the Canary Islands in April totalled 1,110,216 people, which equates to just 0.2% less than arrivals during the same month of 2019, consisting mostly in travellers arriving from the UK and Germany. The airports of Tenerife South and Fuerteventura actually improved upon pre-pandemic figures by 4.1% and 0.1% respectively.

In the case of the Balearic Islands, air passenger arrivals rose to 1,139,613, representing a recovery of 96.8% pre-pandemic figures, with the German market comprising the majority of travellers.

While Spain’s islands show the biggest recovery to pre-pandemic levels, the communities of Catalonia and Valencia have registered the largest year-on-year growth, with figures of 1006.3% and 962% respectively.
