Spain combats food waste in restaurants

22 June, 2022

Spain is taking a new step towards sustainability with regulations that directly impact the food and hospitality industry. The government has set out to reduce food waste to a minimum and has just passed a law requiring restaurants to offer customers their leftover food instead of throwing it away.

The regulation, known as the Law on the Prevention of Food Loss and Waste, will be compulsory for all catering businesses, except in the case of free buffets. To achieve this objective, they’ll need to have reusable or easily disposable food packaging.

Consumers will have the right to take home any leftover food they’ve not eaten, at no additional cost. The measures also stipulate that businesses in the food chain must have preventive measures in place to minimise food waste and promote its reuse, with priority given to human consumption.
