Why Spain is at the forefront of sustainable development in hotels

29 June, 2022

The celebration of World Environment Day at the beginning of June was cause for a brief review of the multitude of sustainable development initiatives currently being implemented by the Spanish hotel industry, which has shown itself to be a world leader in terms of the scope of its commitments.

This year, the hotel chain Ilunion Hotels is promoting the 1st Suppliers Conference ‘Allies for Change’, with the aim of raising awareness among its partners about environmental issues and the importance of considering them in its value chain.

Meliá, meanwhile, launched the CO2PERATE project, which uses artificial intelligence as a driver for the management and control of natural resources, reducing its scope 1 and 2 emissions by more than 50%.

Elsewhere, the Mallorcan hotel chain Garden Hotels has become a leader in circular economy and waste management initiatives. A prime example is their system for managing kitchen waste, which they convert into compost and then use in their garden to obtain top quality organic vegetables and greens.

Independent hotels have also been working hard, with many of them becoming a model to follow in terms of sustainability. Hotel Cueva del Gato in Malaga and the Más Salagros Eco-Resort in Barcelona, for example, have created unforgettable experiences for their guest through 100% ecological and sustainable practices in all of the hotels’ activities.

New initiatives such as ECO-ONE are also emerging, which helps hotels on their path towards sustainability by unifying sustainable services and products through a single partner. More than 60 companies have already signed up.
