What do Brits spend most of their money on when they visit Spain?

31 August, 2022

British holidaymakers who choose Spain as a tourist destination spend almost 30% of their total budget on restaurants, according to the financial app Revolut. It claims that transport and shopping come second and third, respectively, among the categories with the highest expenditure.

Although the total spending of international tourists in Spain has increased by 151% from May to mid-July 2022 compared to the same period last year, the average spending per holidaymaker has decreased by 5.18% compared to last year. Thus, an average of 403 euros is being spent in Spain this year, compared to 425 euros last year.

Despite already exceeding pre-pandemic levels (in 2019 the average spending per tourist stood at 363 euros) the negative economic outlook may be behind the spending restraint by international tourists, according to this report.

In 2022, the profile of tourists visiting Spanish cities also changed, with an increase among young people aged between 18 and 24 and the over-55s. In contrast, the age group that traditionally travelled the most, between 25 and 44 years of age, saw a reduction in the number of trips compared to last year.
