Christmas in Spain: lights, tradition and environment

21 December, 2022

Travelling at Christmas is always special. The cities have a charm which is not seen at any other time of the year. Since the end of November, the streets in Spain have been filled with thousands of sustainable light bulbs and it is time for the traditional markets. There is a special atmosphere, for many it means the reunion with their family and loved ones, for others the opportunity to discover new destinations or rediscover them from another perspective.

In Spanish cities and towns, impressive nativity scenes currently abound, the Three Kings Parade on 5 January following the Catholic tradition; but also, ice skating rinks or a pleasant smell of chestnuts and ‘churros’ to enjoy freshly made and still hot with friends.

Some of the cities in Spain with a good Christmas atmosphere and which shine in an incredible way during the festivities are, to begin with and as expected, Madrid and Barcelona. To these, Turespaña adds Malaga -the image corresponds to the Christmas illumination of Calle Larios in this Andalusian city-, Vigo, Valencia. But also Palma de Mallorca, Zaragoza, Seville, Granada, Santander, Oviedo and many more.
