Hotels in Tenerife transform their waste into compost

22 February, 2023

Around 90 tonnes of organic and pruning remains collected in half a dozen hotels in Tenerife over the course of six weeks have been transformed into 14,000 kilos of compost which have been ear-marked for use in organic farms spread throughout the Canary island.

This initiative is part of the “Circular Tourist Communities” project, promoted by the local hotel association Ashotel and the Association of Farmers and Ranchers of the Canary Islands, and represents a step forward in the involvement of the tourism industry in sustainable development, relying on a line of work as interesting as composting.

The six hotels participating in the project are located in the municipality of Adeje and are the following: Bahía Príncipe Sunlight Costa Adeje, Bahía del Duque, GF Gran Costa Adeje, RIU Palace Tenerife, Iberostar Bouganville Playa and HOVIMA Costa Adeje, totalling accommodation for almost 5,000.
