Two Spanish airports had more flights in 2022 than in 2019

The airports in the network of the Spanish Airports and Air Traffic (Aena) organisation closed the month of January 2023 with 16,930,100 passengers, 2.1% above the data for the same month of 2019, the pre-pandemic year, and which, furthermore represents an increase of 62.7% compared to January 2022.

In January 2023, there were 156,500 flights i.e. a recovery of 98.1% compared to 2019 and an increase of 18.7% compared to 2022. Of the total number of travellers registered in January, 16,858,135 corresponded to commercial passengers, of which 10,724,913 travelled on international flights, a recovery of 99.2% compared to January 2019 and 72.1% more than in 2022.

Madrid-Barajas Airport registered the highest number of passengers in the first month of the year with 4,433,209, 1.1% higher than January 2019, as well as a 64.8% increase compared to last January. Barcelona-El Prat follows with 3,078,737 (-6% as compared to 2019 and +80.9% as compared to 2022) and Gran Canaria with 1,204,146.
