Alicante-Elche airport to be extended at the end of the year
5 June, 2024At the meeting held between the management of Aena and representatives of the Generalitat Valenciana, the airport manager has undertaken to invite tenders for the extension of Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández airport in the last quarter of this year. The aim is to increase capacity and cover future demand, as will be the case with Valencia-Manises airport, the next in line.
This is a long-standing demand as the regional authorities of the Valencian Community have repeatedly insisted that both airports need to increase their capacity. In fact, Alicante-Elche airport is one of the airports which, at European level, has seen the greatest increase in air traffic compared to the previous year and has far exceeded pre-pandemic records.
In the case of Alicante airport, according to a study by the Alicante Chamber of Commerce, if a second runway were to be built, it would have an impact of more than €785 million on the regional GDP and €920 million in annual revenue would be at stake.
