Spain, among the safest destinations for LGTBIQ+ tourism

10 July, 2024

LGTBIQ+ tourists are looking for different destinations to celebrate. However, regardless of whether they are travelling alone or in the company of friends or partners, one of their priorities is often to feel safe in the place they wish to visit. For this purpose, Statista has drawn up a map, with the data collected by the Gay Travel Index of the Spartacus portal, which shows in colour the best and worst countries for people from this community to visit.

On this map, Spain ranks fifth in the world, behind Canada, Malta, New Zealand and Portugal and ahead of Australia, Switzerland, Denmark, Germany and Iceland. On the opposite side of the spectrum to the most tolerant countries are Saudi Arabia, Iran, Chechnya and Afghanistan, which are considered the most unsafe tourist destinations for LGTBIQ+ people.

The Spartacus portal, which has been publishing the Gay Travel Index since 2012, this year compared 213 countries and regions according to the situation of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer people in their territories. To do so, it analysed 18 categories ranging from adoption to religious influence. Statista has used its results to determine the position of each country.
