Car rental increases by 20% in Spain this summer

14 August, 2024

The National Vehicle Rental Federation (Feneval) estimates that this summer the number of car rentals has increased by 20%. In a recent interview, the president of this employers’ association, Juan Luis Barahona, confirmed that the volume of vehicles for hire is significantly higher than last year.

A trend observed this summer, but which actually came with the pandemic, is that cars are rented for fewer days, whereas before the average was 7 days. On the volume recovery, Barahona explains that it has been made possible by the normalisation of vehicle production, as opposed to the problems of last year and the year before, and there are now cars on the market to buy.

At present, the rent-a-car fleet in Spain is between 650,000 and 700,000 vehicles. Barahona highlighted the multiplier effect of tourism and explained that, for example, the sector accounts for 17-20% of new vehicles purchased in the country.
