The Canaries certify their means to reduce their carbon footprint

9 October, 2024

Turismo de Canarias has made the islands the first Spanish tourist destination to have a certified carbon footprint measurement tool. During the 1st Canary Islands Tourism Convention, held in late September, the public company of the Canaries’ Government received the certificate from AENOR, the leading entity in the generation of trust in Spain, for its initiative ‘Journey to decarbonisation’.

The Canary Islands’ Minister of Tourism and Employment, Jéssica de León, was in charge of opening the convention, in which the Canary Islands Tourism team shared the advances and strategies it is implementing to achieve a more sustainable and competitive tourism with over a hundred agents of the sector.

De León explained that this convention responds to a demand from the public and private sector, who asked “to know the strategy of the Canary Islands destination, to know what actions we are developing, or what the connectivity forecasts are, fundamentally for the winter season”. She underlined that El Hierro will be a zero-emissions island by 2026.
