First test flights of air taxis between Spanish airports
4 December, 2024Aena announced the first air taxis tests in Spain in late November. The network plans to operate at least two test flights of electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOL), between the airports of Palma de Mallorca and Menorca and between Malaga and Granada, in order to validate flight procedures and establish standards for this type of operation in Spain.
The airport manager is working on the EUREKA and OperA programmes, within the framework of SESAR, to establish the basis for this type of operation, integrating them into airports and commercial operations. To this end, coordination between all the centres and actors involved is essential, as well as identifying the “specific needs” of each of them.
The first pilot tests will be carried out between Malaga and Granada airports and between Palma de Mallorca and Menorca, between 2025 and 2026. These electric aircraft designed to cover short distances represent a step towards more sustainable and efficient mobility in urban environments.
