10 May, 2023

The “Mencey Futurista de Honor Award” has been awarded to the island of El Hierro, in the Canary Islands. This prestigious award, granted by the Futurismo organisation, values the environmental policies developed by the island and was presented at the X National Forum for Tourism Entrepreneurs and Professionals in Spain, Futurismo 2023, at the end of April.

El Hierro has been selected by positioning itself as one of the most sustainable destinations in the world, seen from the tourism and energy perspective. “The efficient management of clean energy on the island of El Hierro has had a wide national and global impact”, as indicated in the previous report which supports the granting of this award.

The latter highlights the milestone of having managed to supply the El Hierro electrical system with 100% clean energy for 24 continuous days in the summer of 2019. The island drew up its first sustainability plan in 1997. In 2000 it was declared a Biosphere Reserve. In September 2014 it became the first National Geopark of the Canary Islands.
