Hotels in Lloret de Mar to fill their swimming pools with desalinated water

10 April, 2024

The Hotel and Catering Guild and the Town Council of Lloret de Mar, on the Costa Brava (Catalonia) have jointly presented a desalination plant project to fill the swimming pools of the town's hotels during the summer. The installation will cost a total of 1.5 million euros, which will be financed by the private sector, with the municipality’s support and will be operational by late May or early June.

The desalination plant is a short-term solution to ensure the quality of services during the summer season and protect the more than 12,000 jobs directly linked to the sector, with over 123 hotels (29,875 hotel beds), four camp sites (1,337 camping units and 3,786 beds) and 12 blocks of tourist flats and HUTs (1,144 beds).

This measure, led by the private sector, adds to the efforts that the municipality has been making in recent years to progressively reduce its water consumption. The plan is to continue working with the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) to obtain a stable concession to provide an alternative for filling public swimming pools.
